Everyone Should Know About Professional Standards in DEI Work
Watch for Breaking News!
As stated by the Institute for Diversity Certification (IDC), "professional standards are the defined practices, ethical guidelines, and expectations that an industry sets to ensure competence, quality work products, and ethical conduct." Two key words in the previous sentence are "Standards" and "Industry." Standards cover everything from the skills and knowledge required for the practice, to the range of behaviors which are considered safe for the workplace, community, and general public. Industry is about relevant adaptations to thos standards which govern how work is performed, behavior is expected, and cultures are to be created.
Although there are several variates regarding what people call DEI work, all of such work is culture-transforming and human-centered, and by nature, must be contained within professional standards if baseline achievment is to be measured and elevated. Having benchmarks is consistent with any other industry practice. Why not THIS industry? DEI work needs professional standards to serve as its bedrock for realizing a culture of inclusive excellence enterprise wide. It's high time this effort be made for ALL industries for the benefit of ALL people.
Not to worry - Coop Di Leu and other subject matter experts have been working over the past year with the IDC, to develop DEI industry standards that demonstrate DEI leaders and employers operate within guidelines that are consistent, safe, and reasonable. Stay tuned for more information about the standards and learn why they will be valuable for your work.
